Sanofi has signed a global licensing and collaboration agreement with UK-based ScionxBio to develop long-acting mRNA therapies, pairing Sanofi’s mRNA Center of Excellence with ScionxBio’s computational design platform.
Most mRNA to date has gone into vaccines, where a short burst of protein expression is enough. Therapeutic uses generally need mRNA that produces its protein for longer, which is a design and delivery challenge as much as a sequence one. ScionxBio’s platform is aimed at engineering that durability.
The deal adds to the steady movement of large drugmakers into mRNA as a therapeutic, not just prophylactic, modality.
