A multidisciplinary consortium led by investigators at the Mass General Brigham Gene and Cell Therapy Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital has been awarded up to $39.2 million by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to advance on-demand, distributed manufacturing of genetic medicines. It is one of five teams selected under ARPA-H’s Genetic Medicines and Individualized Manufacturing for Everyone (GIVE) program.

The award supports a project called FUSE (Fast Unified Synthesis and Evaluation), which aims to build a compact, automated system that integrates the production and analysis of RNA medicines in a single platform. NanoMosaic, an analytical-technology company, is developing FUSE’s analytical and software engine, embedding quality assurance, quality control, and release testing directly into the manufacturing process.

The effort is intended to make genetic-medicine manufacturing more automated and enable production in distributed or near-patient settings.
