Chemical genetics (include DREADDs, receptors that are activated by particular drugs) is a technology to apply genetic methods to modify biological macromolecules in order that they can recognize small molecules which were previously unrecognizable. Therefore, cell activities can be regulated by combining small molecules. For example, receptors that are only activated by specific drugs (Designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs, DREADDs).
By using AAV vectors to express modified G protein-coupled receptors in mice, and then injecting corresponding chemical molecules, the functions of specific mouse cells can be changed.
